Three kinds of people in world; Those that make things happen, Those that watch things happen, and Those that sit back and wonder what just happened!
One thing that I have realized over the decades that I have been working out, playing sports, and personal training is that you have to want it! When I embarked on a career in fitness, I started out at New York Sports Club working the front desk. I would open the club up at 5am in the morning, and there would be about 5 or 6 members that would come in every morning at that time to workout. They definitely wanted it! I would come in with my Essentials of Strength and Conditional Journal and sit there and read. I would read all about anatomy, kinesiology, physiology and basically everything I could about the human body and how it functioned.
Alot of the trainers at that time would kinda look at me as if to say "what are you reading that for, you already know how to workout?" Which was true, however I also knew that knowledge is power, but applied knowledge is the real power. Sure I knew how to workout for myself, however what I was learning was how to apply that knowledge to teaching others. And you could never learn to much in this ever evolving field of fitness. I opened the club up for about 41/2 months, and finally became a floor trainer! I was so excited to put what I learned into action and start training. I also realized how working for a corporate gym can be all about the numbers and not so much about the training. Anyhow I did not let that stop me, fueled with passion I picked up about 14 clients in the next month in a half! And I kept going, so much so the Area Fitness Program Mngr (at the time) Pete Cosentino, promoted me to Fitness Program Mngr. I went off to run a club in Larchmont N.Y. The same trainers that were asking me why was I coming into read all the time, were now asking "why am I going to take a FPM job?" My reply was "for the experience and to learn another aspect of the business."
So it wasn't really no surprise to me when I first started doing Crossfit, that the trainers around me were asking "Why are you doing that", or saying "That's not gonna last", "It's too hard for people". Now, over 430 locations later, on 5 different continents, used by most military, police, fire authority, mixed martial artist, pro and collegiate athletes, and just about everybody, I think they understand.
